WHAT IS A TYPICAL PODCAST?

2. Which contains your own radio show or any audio you wish others to have…

3. That you upload along with an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) file to a server (your website for instance)…

4. That your intended listeners download using one of several programs that have been created to retrieve your audio file automatically…

5. So they can listen to it at their convenience on their own iPod or .mp3 player.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO CREATE A PODCAST?
-You have a hobby and want to share it with the world.

-You’re a musician and have music to share.

-You own a business and need to communicate a message to wide variety of people who live in different locations.

-You just want to rant and rave.

WHO CAN CREATE A PODCAST?

-ANYONE CAN CREATE A PODCAST! However, it takes proper planning to make it good.

WHAT SHOULD MY PODCAST BE ABOUT?

-The best podcasts usually have to do with a topic you have an interest in whether it be a specific television show, movie, movie genera, music, anime, video games, ect., ect. No matter what your podcast, be passionate about your topics!

HOW MANY PEOPLE SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN MY PODCAST?
We’ve found that it’s best to have more than one person, however there are very good podcasts with just a single host.

SCRIPTING AND LAYING OUT YOUR SHOW

-Planning ahead and writing the show is very important. You don’t have to write it out word for word, but have a basic layout (a map if you will) of what your planning to do for each show. You can print it out or have it on the screen in front of you.

HOSTING A GOOD SHOW

-Adding flare, comedy, personality and stories

In order to make a good podcast you will need to learn a few skills:

1. What equipment you need.

2. How to record your audio and save it to an .mp3 file.

3. How to create an RSS file which holds the “directions” for sending your file when a user’s program like iPodder requests it using Word Press and Pod Press.

4. Uploading your .mp3 file.

5. Scripting and laying out your show.

6. Hosting a good show

7. Getting your show noticed.

EQUPIMENT

Truthfully the equipment you need for your podcast completely depends on what you want to do with your podcast. The MOST IMPORTANT piece of equipment you need is a microphone. Typically, the better the microphone the better your podcast is going to sound. The key is to do your research before buying and talk to other people.

HOW TO POST A PODCAST ON THE INTERNET:

-You need an FTP Program to upload your MP3. We suggest using FTP Commander (because it’s free)

-There are a variety of ways to get your podcast online.
-Most every webhosting service comes with blogging software called Word Press. Then we install a plug-in called Pod Press. Pod Press allows you to enter the URL of the MP3 file you have uploaded and automatically creates an RSS file.

-We use a hosting service called Host Monster. It runs about $10.00 a month.

-If you aren’t familiar with FTP or RSS you may want to consider paying for a blogging service such as podbean. These companies already have blogs and plug-ins set up and all you have to do is upload and submit your file.

GETTING YOUR SHOW NOTICED

-Submit your RSS to places like Podcast Alley, Google and a variety of other search engines.

-Plug your podcast on message boards and chats that relate to your topic.
